BACKGROUND
Established in 1945 at The University of New Mexico, the Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) was created to foster economic development in New Mexico by conducting studies of the economic resources and business activity in the state and by producing publications based upon the results of such studies. As an extension of these activities, the BBER has provided a specialized reference service to the public since its founding. In 1967 this service and reference collection were officially designated the Data Bank.
DATA USERS
The Data Bank is open to the public and staff responds to about 1,000 information requests annually. Primary users are individual businesses and federal, state and local government agencies, though the general public, print and broadcast media, and the university community are also regular patrons.
DATA BANK ACCESS AND FEES
Requests for information are handled by phone, letter, FAX, e-mail and in-person. For data requests that are limited in scope, information is often given without charge. Fee-based services are also available for custom research. Examples of services for a fee include the following: the creation of statistical data tables and charts; extensive Internet searches and data retrieval; the delivery of statistical information through photocopies, mail and FAX transmission; and the processing of census computer tapes or CDs.
As a public service the first half hour of research is offered free, after which fees for staff time are based on an hourly rate of $45.00. There is a $10.00 handling fee (to cover invoice processing) on all requests in which data are sent by mail, FAX, or electronically. Additional charges include $0.25 per page for photocopies and Fax's at a $1.50 per page. There are also charges for reproduction of census maps that vary according to the type of original. Invoices for services and materials will be mailed to the client since credit card charges cannot be accepted.
BBER also offers a variety of publications and subscriptions. Click here to link to our current publication listings.
