Annual population estimates describe the population at a particular reference date. Check the release vintage when comparing estimates, because a new release can revise earlier figures.
American Community Survey estimates describe a sample of residents. An ACS 5-year estimate combines responses across five years and does not describe only the final year. Compare the same ACS product and non-overlapping periods, and consider margins of error.
Population projections describe possible future populations under stated assumptions. They are not observed population counts. Use the publisher's methodology and release vintage when citing them.
